Club History
The Journey of Mount Pleasant FC
MPJFC were informally formed in May 2002 by Yunus Lunat and Hasan Mayet. The objective was to enable children to channel their energies by playing football in a supervised environment during the summer months to help keep the children away from mischief. Batley is a close knit community with a significant Muslim community and as with many Asian communities there had been a reluctance to face up to the growing drug threat within the community. Both saw football as an opportunity to use football as a means of education and social cohesion.
Both were encouraged by the children's enthusiasm. The very first sessions attracted about 15 children, but this grew to 40 within weeks by word of mouth. This encouraged "Mr Batley Post Office" Ismail Loonat and Madressa Islamiya teacher Hafez Abdullah Rajah to volunteer.
Very soon Kirklees Leisure Services took an interest in the project. Local resident Umar Rafiq played an instrumental role in guiding Yunus and Hasan to formalise the project and attain FA coaching badges. Umar and his manager the late David Morby and Sports Development Officer James Beattie were unrelenting in their support.
In 2004 the first Mount Pleasant team was entered in the Huddersfield Junior Football League (HJFL) at under 14 level. The team quickly adapted and gained promotions in successive seasons progressing from division 5 to division 2.
Being the first junior Muslim club encouraged the parents and community to come out in support. The support and conduct of everyone involved was impeccable. They not only gained the respect of their competitors but more significantly, being the first Muslim club, laid the foundations by developing a mutual trust and understanding which continues today and will benefit future generations.
The West Riding FA noted the positive work being done and assisted the club to become an FA Charter Standard Club. In 2008 the West Riding FA recognised the excellent work with the award of the Grassroots Community Club of the Year.
Fast forward to 2024 and the club continues to grow, catering from age 5 right through to open age adult football. The club provides opportunities for 375 children registered playing in the HJFL and have also developed girls football.
The club acknowledges the support of all past and present volunteers and the many sponsors, especially Al Murad Group and Bedmill/Europa who have been supportive from inception.
